Fell racing is a great way to get into the sport. Yes, it does involve going as fast as you can uphill and downhill and over sometimes very rough terrain, but all standards take part and when the going get tough it’s OK to walk.
Fell races are a popular sport in North Wales, with races of all lengths and degrees of difficulty on offer throughout the year. Ras Pedol Peris is a classic example. The 17½ mile race involves around 8500 feet of ascent and takes in the peaks of Elidir Fawr, Foel Goch, Glyder Fawr, Lliwedd, Snowdon and Moel Cynghorion.
There is a definite advantage to knowing the race route. Familiarisation with the terrain and degree of slope can provide a distinct advantage in a race.
