Get into fell running
- Training Weekends
- Snowdonia, UK
- Oct 12 - 14, 2018
Learn how to run efficiently over any terrain, as well as develop map & compass skills, so you can plan routes to run suitable to your experience.
We like to have a plan then break it. If weather windows appear we may mix up the schedule to optimise the conditions.
Evening Social Run
Duration: 1 hour
We do a social run of around 4-5 miles on good trails for those that arrive before 6 pm. During the shorter-day months, this is a nice chance to experience off-road running in the dark. Don't worry if you can't make the run, it's just a bonus session.
Weather and kit check
Duration: 1 hour 15 mins
We usually meet up at a cafe and get started over a cup of tea or coffee. This session concentrates on teaching you what kit you need to pack, particularly with consideration for the weather. By the end of the session, you will have the confidence to pack (and wear) the right kit to stay safe while at the same time maximising the fast-and-light principle so you enjoy your run unburdened. We will also discuss food and water strategies. This is a chance to ask questions and address any specific things you want to learn. After the tutorial, you'll have time to re-pack your kit, if you need to, with the wisdom of your newly learnt skills.
Technique Training Run
Duration: 2 hours 30 mins
During this run, you will be exposed to the different types of terrain you need to tackle when running on the fell where we'll give each of you some one-on-one time to address any specific technique improvements. There will be some steep uphills and downhills where you'll learn the strategies for attacking the ascents and descents. At the end of the run, we discuss stretching and injury prevention.
Duration: 1 hour 30 mins
If we have based our run from Llanberis you'll be able to have a shower, freshen up and then enjoy a break at one of the cafe's we recommend. Otherwise, there's the option of a dip in a river before refuelling at one of the other cafes we like to visit in the National Park. We give you plenty of time to relax before the afternoon session.
Duration: 2 hours
When you join one of our events you get access to the Run Refuel Acadamy, where you will have access to the 'learn how to navigate' course. Apply a little bit of time to this course before the event and you'll hit the ground running, so to speak. You'll learn about different types of maps and the important elements you need to understand each time you look at a new map. We'll go over map features and how to interpret them, as well as how to use a compass and take a bearing. We'll probably eat cake.
Duration: 1 hour 30 mins
After digesting all the theory it's time to put it into practice. We keep this session at walking pace to make sure you learn the skills to a high level down to micro-navigation, so dress warm! At the end of the session, you should be capable of reading and interpreting a map, locating specific features, planning how to get from A to B as well as taking a compass bearing and walking on it. We also discuss strategies for when you get lost and how to relocate yourself.
Route planning theory
Duration: 2 hours
It's all about coffee, tea and cake and a few hours to get stuck into learning about how to plan an off-road route to run suited to your level of ability. By the end of the session, you will have plotted a series of checkpoints and developed strategies for how to get from A to B. We provide small maps so that you can learn how to move fast-and-light while navigating on the fly.
Run your planned route
Duration: 3 hours 30 mins
It's time to navigate around your planned course, while we accompany you to make sure you stay on track. The run itself is a very easy pace and involves stops to address navigation aspects. We cover around 8-10 miles on the fell and if the weather allows we will be getting up on the tops so expect a minimum of 1000m ascent. During the run, we will also discuss mountain safety and run through some scenarios for what can go wrong and how to get out of trouble.
Debrief & refuel
Duration: 45 mins
For those that don't have to rush off, we head off to a cafe for a good refuel and a debrief on the weekend. This is a good chance to discuss any additional aspects of your running such as training plans and how to avoid over-training.
Location - Snowdonia, UK
We base our events in beautiful Llanberis, however we may travel to a location up to 10 miles away to do some of our activities. We like to avoid the crowds & show you the hidden gems of the area.
When you book into the event, you'll have access to our Snowdonia info section. Just toggle the clubs icon top left to see. You'll have access to running routes after the event so that you can come back and practice all the things we teach you on your own if you like.
Where to stay
We've found that our clients prefer to organise their own accommodation, but it's best to book early. Snowdonia is a popular place.
When you book into one of our events we'll send you some links of our favourite places. If you'd like to have a look before booking, check out airbnb for some ideas (we've plugged the event dates in for you in the link below). If you are bringing your family or are coming as part of a group, check out our little cottage just 5-10mins drive from Llanberis.
